Big-city Amenities with Small-town Charm: Why City Dwellers Are Moving to Matthews, N.C.
“Matthews is a great place to live because we have big city amenities yet maintain a small-town feel,” says John F. Higdon, mayor pro tem, Town of Matthews.
Earlier this year, Erickson Living celebrated the grand opening of its twentieth community, Windsor Run in Matthews, located just south of Charlotte in Mecklenburg County.
“Matthews is the perfect setting for our community,” says Windsor Run Executive Director George Comfort. “This beautiful town represents a diverse community, rich culture, and vast amenities.”
Appealing to urbanites
The current population of Windsor Run includes people who have moved from the Charlotte city limits, those who grew up in Matthews, and those who’ve moved from as far away as Alaska.
“Living in Matthews is such a personal experience for so many people,” says Higdon. “There are opportunities for all ages and all interests. We are a blend of people from all areas of our nation and world who live together in an inclusive and friendly town.”
“While exploring my retirement living options, I visited the Windsor Run sales center and explored downtown Matthews and the surrounding area,” says Gretchen Hazen, who moved from Anchorage, Alaska. “I’ve always lived where I could walk a lot; run errands on foot; and in most cases bike, walk, or take public transportation to work. I knew that I needed to live in a city-like environment so that I could continue to do those things. One visit to Matthews and I knew this was where I was meant to be.”
The best part about living in Matthews is that, in addition to offering many urban advantages, community members also enjoy the hospitality and communitywide celebrations of small town living.
Matthews hosts one of the largest Labor Day festivals in the country, known as Matthews Alive, as well as many other festivals throughout the year, including Beachfest and the Hometown Holiday celebration. The highly acclaimed Matthews Playhouse regularly offers top-notch productions, and music lovers enjoy a variety of outdoor concerts at Stumptown Park.
“The growth of Matthews has brought many new people to our town,” says Higdon. “Each brings their experiences and ideas to further enhance our community. The people of Matthews are our greatest asset, and we look forward to the residents of Windsor Run being part of Matthews.”
